WHO Issues Alert Over Critical Scarcity of Obesity Jabs

Under one in 10 people who could benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy have access to them, warns the global health agency as it releases its first recommendations on the drugs.

Considering over a billion people worldwide now living with obesity, it is urging more widespread and fairer access to GLP-1 medication.

According to estimates, over two billion could be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidance affirms that obesity is a long-term condition that can be treated with thorough and ongoing support," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are key barriers to widespread availability to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing substantial weight, explains the agency.
