Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
