European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
