The US President along with Colombia's president have escalated the tone of their war of words, further raising tensions bilaterally following American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from office.
"He operates drug factories and production sites and his time is running out," the US president stated.
Rising Rhetoric coupled with Accusations
Speaking to reporters over the weekend, the US president hinted at analogous military action towards the South American nation, asserting the country faces serious problems and led by a problematic figure who likes making narcotics and trafficking it to the United States."
Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest producer of cocaine, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the illicit industry.
A Deteriorating Partnership
The country for decades served as a key ally of the United States in the campaign combating drug cartels and benefited from wide political approval from American politicians, however, the relationship have worsened markedly after Trump assumed the presidency.
The nation's illicit drug economy is predominantly run by guerrilla factions including the Clan del Golfo, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members disbanded subsequent to a historic peace agreement.
Petro's Firm Response
In response to a query whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea to me."
Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle decades ago, firmly denied these allegations. "I am not an illegitimate leader and certainly not a drug trafficker," he declared.
"Trump speaks without information. Stop slandering me," he expressed in a post.
"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will transform into numerous insurgents in the mountains. And if they detain me, whom a significant portion of Colombians admires and supports, they will unleash the powerful force of the populace," the president cautioned.
From Guerrilla to Leader
He passed a period in his early life as a member in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement though it is believed to have ever engaged in fighting. After demobilizing, he took part in writing the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá before winning the presidency.
"I swore not to touch arms again ... but for the homeland I would take up arms again," he vowed.
Reinforced Protection and Broad Rejection
Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the president’s protection team had received additional support.
Many among Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump's stance, yet figures from across the political spectrum have denounced the possibility of a US attack targeting Colombia.
Political and Financial Strains
American authorities withdrew his travel authorization after he called on American soldiers to disobey unlawful commands. In October, authorities imposed asset freezes on Petro, his wife and various close collaborators.
Simultaneously as the US increased its troop levels in the region and targeting suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces also carried out operations on maritime targets off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
